ELKVIEW, W.Va. – The Herbert Hoover football team had raced out to a perfect 4-0 record prior to Week 6 of the West Virginia high school football season, but the Huskies had not been asked to do much away from their home confines.
Last week’s trip to Chapmanville represented the first time Hoover had been tasked with playing outside of Kanawha County and just the second time it had gone on the road all season. Any question, however, of how the Huskies might fare on the road in Logan County were quickly put to bed on the back of another big game from Blake Fisher.
The junior who does a little bit of everything head coach Joey Fields’ squad was at it again against the Tigers, running for 125 yards on just six carries that included two long touchdown gallops, and was involved in the passing game as well with four catches for 57 yards as Herbert Hoover cruised to a 41-7 win.
For his efforts, Fisher has been named the Lootpress Kanawha Valley Player of the Week. The award is presented by The Law Offices of Brandon S. Steele.
“I think [Fisher] would play for anybody,” Fields said. “He could be anyone’s top player – one of the best players on their team on both sides of the ball.”
Fisher has been a big part of a prolific Hoover ground game so far in 2024, accounting for nearly 500 yards with 10 total touchdowns – nine of them rushing.
“He’s special, man,” Fields said. “The good thing about him is he’s a junior, so he’s still got a lot of football ahead with us the next two years.”
Hurricane running back A.J. Gregory, who ran for 112 yards with two touchdowns on just four carries in a win against St. Albans, won the Community Choice fan vote with more than 56 percent of the 4,395 votes cast coming in for the Redskins’ junior.
Gregory advances to the Community Choice poll at the end of the regular season, with the winner of that poll awarded a $500 scholarship by the Lootpress Foundation.
