ELKVIEW, W.Va. – Any doubts that Dane Hatfield would go down as the best player in the history of Herber Hoover football were put to rest last week.
Hatfield, the Huskies’ senior quarterback who already owned the school records for passing yards and total touchdowns, put his name at the top of another list in a 56-7 rout of visiting Elkins.
With a five-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Hatfield passed D.J. Taylor’s all-time Herbert Hoover rushing mark of 5,451 yards set in 2,006. It was one of six total touchdowns to go with 434 total yards of offense as the Class AAA No. 4 Huskies pushed their unbeaten record to 8-0.
For his efforts, Hatfield has been named the Lootpress Kanawha Valley Player of the Week. The award is presented by The Law Offices of Brandon S. Steele.
“[Hatfield] is the toughest football player I’ve ever coached,” Hoover head coach Joey Fields said. “I really believe he could be our best defensive player if that’s what he played. He’d be our best wide receiver [if he wanted to]. I think at the next level he can play tight end or maybe some people will give him a shot at quarterback. He’s a kid that has a very good chance to go down as our all-time leading scorer in basketball too.”
Hatfield, a four-year starter for Herbert Hoover, ran for 315 yards and ive scores against Elkins while completing 8 of 10 pass attempts for 119 yards and one touchdown through the air.
“He’s a kid you want in your locker room,” Fields said. “You see what he can do for you on Friday night but he does more for you during the week.
“What he’s done for me and this program will live for a long, long time.”
Hatfield also won the Community Choice fan vote and advances to the Community Choice poll at the end of the regular season, with the winner of that poll awarded a $500 scholarship from the Lootpress Foundation.
