Over the last two seasons Summers County has leaned on the wing-T offense to move the sticks.
Building off of what the Bobcats did late last season, they’ve transitioned to a spread offense that relies heavily on the pass and getting its playmakers into space.
Engineering that attack has been senior QB Brandan Isaac who turned in one of his best efforts of the season Friday in a 57-12 win over Pocahontas County. Isaac finished with 366 passing yards and five touchdown passes in the win.
For his efforts Isaac has been named the Week 9 Player of the Week by the Lootpress sports writers.
The award is sponsored by Little General, The Northside Automotive Group, Dutch Miller Auto and The Law Offices of Brandon Steele.
Isaac finished second in the fan poll but because the winner, Kaiden Simms, has already won the poll once this season Isaac advances to the Community Choice poll at the end of the year.
Isaac’s trekked a long, challenging road as he’s fought through injuries and illness throughout his high school career.
“I’ve been the starter for three years now and some injuries and sickness have kept me from playing at times,” Isaac said. “But being out here with the guys, it’s amazing. Being out here is better than anything.”
Isaac was the first to point out that the Player of the Week award was more a team effort, going into the nuances of the jobs his teammates performed in the win.
“We had good protection all night like we do every night and Tyson Adkins, I don’t think he’s ever missed blitz pickup in his life,” Isaac said. “Every time they bring six he’s basically like another offensive lineman that can run and catch the ball. He’s one heck of a player and having him back there and having some studs at receiver that can catch anything I throw at them and the o-line – without them I couldn’t do what I do.”
While the performance was notable, it’s on par with how Isaac has played all season. He’s thrown for over 2,000 yards this year and is on the verge of breaking the program’s single-season passing yards record after having already claimed the single-game record.
“We’ve been a run team the last couple of years but if you want to win big time games you’ve got to be able to do both. I think that speaks to the season we’re having this year. We lost some games we feel like we should’ve won but it’s football and having the ability to run and pass whenever we feel we need to, it’s big in all moments.”
Isaac will be honored at the Lootpress Player the Year Banquet on Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
