Throughout their young careers, Hurricane’s Savannah Hawkins and Westside’s Kerri-Anne Cook have been two of the dominant junior golfers across the Mountain State.
Tuesday afternoon the two good friends were once again vying for the top spot, this time at the 2023 W.Va. Girls Invitational Championship at Mingo Bottom Golf Club.
When the last putt dropped, Hawkins had fired a two-under par round of 70, good enough for her second consecutive title.
Cook was also impressive just two shots back in second place after an even par round of 72 which was her best 18-hole score of the four years she had played in Elizabeth, WV.
The Westside senior got off to a rough start with three bogeys in the first five holes before making back-to-back birdies on holes seven and eight.
Three birdies and two bogeys on the final nine holes put the young phenom at even par for the day.
Hawkins made bogey on her first hole of the day, but that would be the only time she was over par on her round.
Birdies at No. 2 and No. 9 sent her out in 35 which she matched on the final nine holes with two birdies against just one bogey.
Audrey Kerr (Bridgeport) and Grace Yan (Morgantown) tied for third place, seven shots back of Cook.
Scarlett Albertson (George Washington) was fifth, while Brielle Milhoan (Parkersburg) was sixth and Madilyn Buttrey (Williamstown) came in seventh. Mackenzie Armstrong (St. Marys) and Maddie Potts (Wheeling Central) tied for eighth to make up the All-tournament team.
Shady Spring sophomore Landri Flohr finished 18th in her first ever appearance at the Girls Invitational Championship and Alley Denny from Beckley tied for 23rd.
