WHEELING – The last two seasons and five out of the last six, Region 3 has hoisted the Class AA golf state championship plaque.
That streak came to an end Wednesday thanks to a Golden Tornado that blew through Wheeling.
On the 20th anniversary of its win in 2002, Keyser was three shots better than second place Winfield to win the AA title played on the Speidel Course at Oglebay Park.
Defending champion Herbert Hoover finished third, one spot ahead of Shady Spring in fourth place.
Noah Broadwater from Keyser fired back-to-back rounds of 75 to take the low medalist honors in Class AA, while Shady Spring standout Tanner Vest came in second place, two shots ahead of Max Bowen from Herbert Hoover.
The Tigers also had a solid showing from two freshman, Tyler Beard who tied for 17th and Cooper Ward in 19th place.
Kerri-Anne Cook from Westside finished in sixth place, while Cody Blake from Independence was tied for 14th place.
Joining Broadwater, Vest, Bowen and Cook on the All-tournament team were Jackson Woodall, Stephen McDavid and Andrew Johnson from Winfield, along with Drew Matlick from Keyser and Jude Smith from Weir.
The Class AAA and Class A championships titles went to schools with a little bit of home course knowledge.
Wheeling Park was 11 shots better than Cabell Midland for the championship amongst the big schools, while Wheeling Central ran away with the small school division, winning by 28 shots over second place St. Marys.
Before the golf season started back in August, Greenbrier East head coach Doug Bicksler thought it might be a rebuilding year for his Spartans. As it turned out, East reloaded with some big guns and ended the season in sixth place at the state tournament in Class AAA.
“We are really pleased with our year and we were really excited that Arod (Lemons) was able to make All-Tournament and Jake (Honaker) made a really good showing,” Bicksler said. “They didn’t play as well as they would have liked too, but they still played pretty darn well.”
Lemons finished in a tie for seventh place and was part of the All-tournament team, while Honaker tied for 11th.
Gavin Goodrich from Wheeling Park took low medalist honors with a two-day total of 149 and Savannah Hawkins from Hurricane was second, four shots back.
Rounding out the top-eight players that earned All-tournament honors were Jack Michael and Taylor Sargent from Cabell Midland, along with Parker Vannoy (Parkersburg South), Campbell Koegler (Wheeling Park), Colton Sprowls (John Marshall) and Carson O’Dell (Hurricane).
After turning some heads last year by making the state tournament, Summers County was confident it would make a return trip to Wheeling this year.
The Bobcats accomplished that goal and were in contention for the title before finishing in fourth place Wednesday.
The good news for Summers County is all four players that made the trip north this year will be back next season to make another run at the title.
Sean Cooper led the Cats finishing tied for ninth place, while Brian Cooper was 18th and Xavier Honaker was 21st after two days.
All three players for Wheeling Central finished inside the top-eight golfers in Class A. Justin Doerr was low Medalist for the Maroon Knights who was followed by Luke Tui in a tie for third and Ryan Costanzo in a tie for fifth.
Joining them for All-tournament were Will Gruse (Charleston Catholic), Lucas Riggleman (Petersburg), J.W. Teets (East Hardy) ans Grant Roush (Wahama).
