Monday night at Grandview Country Club, Woodrow Wilson and Shady Spring battled to a tie in a golf match hosted by Independence.
Junior Ian Thompson for the Flying Eagles took home low medalist honors for the day with a solid round of 2-under par 34.
“That was my lowest round ever on nine holes,” Thompson said after the match. “I think it was my putting that helped me a lot. I was dropping some long putts and outside of 12-feet I was getting it close for par. The driver was on today and my wedges were good. It was an all-around smooth round.”
Thompson dropped in a quick birdie on the second hole before his only stumble of the day occurred a hole later.
After his approach shot to the third hole rolled to the back of the green, a three-putt led to the only bogey of the round.
The junior standout never wavered and answered back with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole before running into some trouble on the fifth hole.
When Thompson’s tee ball on the lengthy par-4 hole strayed a little left behind a tree, a decision to play smart and put the ball back in the fairway paid big dividends. Facing a 30-foot putt for par, Thompson calmly rolled in the par saving putt to keep his momentum going.
The third birdie of the round came on hole six before Thompson closed out the round with three straight pars.
“Just playing safe is what will help your score a lot,” Thompson explained. “I had three birdies today and just the one bogey.”
Jonah Wilson shot 40 and Alley Denney had 42 to round out the scoring for Woodrow Wilson.
Nate Richmond and Tyler Beard each had a 38 to lead Shady Spring, while Cooper Ward shot 40.
Cody Blake from Independence also had a solid round of 39 Monday.
