Beckley – Aurelia Kirby scored the golden goal as Charleston Catholic defeated Philip Barbour 3-2 in double OT, claiming the Class AA/A championship Saturday in Beckley.
After Philip Barbour’s Lydia Phillips staked the Colts to a 1-0 lead, Charleston Catholic’s Claire Mullen tied the game with a goal in the 24th minute. The lead changed hands in favor of the Colts as Layna Grassi converted on a penalty kick.
Catholic’s Jill Uy knotted it once more with a free kick before the break but the scoring stopped in the second half, giving fans who made the trek to Beckley their third overtime game of the day.
After going scoreless in the first overtime Kirby made sure the hour-long trip back up the interstate would be a sweet one with the winning goal.
