Charleston – Four Woodrow Wilson tennis players secured state tournament berths Monday at the Region 3 tennis tournament held at the Kanawha City Community Center.
Elysia Salon won the Region 3 championship crown at No. 1 singles with wins over Kaylea Barker from Capital, Parker McGuffin form Greenbrier East and hard-fought 9-7 win over Jeeya Patel from George Washington in the championship match.
Salon joins sisters Sofia and Maria as regional champions and will be the No. 1 seed in her bracket at the state tournament starting May 12.
Freshman Abby Dillon made the state tournament field at No. 2 singles with wins over Jillian Beaver from Capital and Lauren Parrish from Princeton.
Zoey Charles from George Washington bested Dillon in the championship match, but Dillon will enter the state tournament as the No. 2 seed in her bracket.
On the boys side, freshman Ram Asaithambi and junior Rahul Ilangovan also made the big dance at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
Asaithambi defeated Wade from Capital in his first-ever regional match before dispatching John Paul Choate from Princeton in the semifinal round.
Ilangovan knocked off South Charleston’s Jack Monks to open his regional tournament and beat Jonathan Nguyan from Greenbrier East in the semifinals for his berth in the championship match.
Both players dropped their championship matches, but qualified for the state tournament as the No. 2 seed in their respective brackets.
The doubles matches will be contested Tuesday morning back at Kanawha City starting at 9 a.m.
