Fairlea – Class AAA No. 1 Bridgeport found some redemption Saturday in head coach Ali (Curry) Burton’s return to her old stomping grounds.
After finishing runner-up last year at the event, the former player and assistant coach under Greenbrier East head coach Matt Sauvage, guided the Indians through a flawless day earning the championship title at Volley in the Valley inside Spartan Gym.
The final win of the day for Bridgeport came against her old school, knocking off AAA No. 4 Greenbrier East 25-22 and 25-21.
The Indians swept Princeton, Jefferson and Nicholas County in pool play before cruising past Capital in the quarterfinals of the Gold Bracket.
Last weekend the Indians topped AAA No. 3 Shady Spring to win the Bridgeport Invitational title. Saturday the two titans met this time in the semifinals, but once again, the Indians came out on top, 25-22 and 25-19.
The Spartans were 5-1 in pool play, sweeping Pendleton County and Bluefield, while earning a split with Capital.
Greenbrier East then knocked off longtime rival Woodrow Wilson 25-14 and 28-26 in the quarterfinals before earning two 25-15 wins over former regional nemesis George Washington.
Spartan junior setter Mackenna McClure collected 113 assists during the tournament and reached a career milestone by going over 1,000 assists.
Woodrow Wilson and Shady Spring also went through pool play unscathed. The Tigers beat Parkersburg 2-1 to advance to the semifinal round.
Wyoming East finished runner-up in the Silver Bracket playing without two key starters. The Warriors dropped the title match to Pendleton County.
East earned 2-1 wins over Independence and Greenbrier West en route to the finals.
