Charleston – In rivalry fashion Saturday’s Region 3 championship went down to the wire for Greenbrier West and James Monroe.
The Cavaliers survived match point three times in the decisive fifth set of the Region 3 championship, topping the Mavericks 21-19 Saturday at Charleston Catholic.
The Cavs took sets two, three and five to secure the match (24-26, 25-1825-19, 22-25, 21-19).
Both teams advance to next week’s state tournament.
Both teams swept their way to the title match with wins earlier in the day. James Monroe beat host Charleston Catholic 25-14, 25-16 and 25-19 while West toppled River View 25-11, 25-15 and 29-27.
