Huntington – The finals at the state wrestling tournament inside Mountain Health Arena are set for Saturday night.
Thirteen area wrestlers will hit the mat with the opportunity to bring home the top prize in their respective weight classes.
In the team competition, Greenbrier West is in first place in Class A, while Independence is in second place and Beckley rests in third place.
Independence, which is chasing its seventh state wrestling title, has six grapplers vying for the AA-A top individual prize, including Dillon Perdue (106) who is seeking his third state title.
Joining Perdue will be Judah Price (150), Jesse Adams (165), Colton Caron (175), Josh Hart (190) and Logan Isom (285).
Dylan Hanshaw from Nicholas County will battle Hart at 190, while Cole Vandall from Greenbrier West will look to bring home the title at 215 pounds.
Six area wrestlers remain in the AA-A consolation bracket.
Caelyb Nichols from Independence and Moses Gray from Greenbrier West will square off again after a wild match in the Region 3 final between the two won by Nichols on a late take down and near fall.
Austin McKenzie (106) and Tucker Lilly (120) from Greenbrier West will look to bring home the third place honor, as will Luke Kelly (113) from Nicholas County and Marcus Matney (285) from PikeView.
Beckley has four wrestlers in Saturday night’s final matches including Garrett Johnson (106), Tyler Roark (126), J.J. Bailes (132) and Ethan Osborne (157).
Bailes is looking to go back-to-back as a state champion, while Osborne is looking bring home the title after a runner-up finish last year.
Troy Harris (138), Vance Neal (144) and Jay Jones (175) are all still alive in the consolation round for Beckley.
Calvin Roberts from Greenbrier East will compete in the final at 285, while fellow Spartans Will Godbey (113) and Thomas Mullins (215) look to make a run in the consolation semis and finals.
Oak Hill has three wrestlers in the consolation bracket including Mason Wills (165), Gabe Truman (215) and Colton Naylor (285).
The semifinals consolation bracket and consolation finals will start at 10:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The championship matches will take place Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m.
