Rain in the forecast? Six things to do on a rainy weekend in West Virginia

WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) — Rain may put hiking trips and outdoor plans on hold, but a wet weekend doesn’t have to mean staying home.

From underground tours to escape rooms and museums, West Virginia offers plenty of places to spend an afternoon out of the weather. Here are six options to consider.

Explore science and art at the Clay Center

The Clay Center for the Arts & Sciences in Charleston offers several indoor attractions under one roof.

Families can explore interactive exhibits at the Avampato Discovery Museum, browse the Juliet Art Museum or catch a scheduled show at the Caperton Planetarium & Theater.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Planetarium showtimes and ticket options should be checked before visiting. www.theclaycenter.org

Test your skills at Escape-A-Torium in Fayetteville

For visitors who prefer an activity that gets everyone involved, Escape-A-Torium in downtown Fayetteville offers themed indoor escape adventures.

Participants work together to find clues and solve challenges before time runs out. Options include “The Feud,” inspired by the Hatfield-McCoy rivalry, and “Last Ship to Mars,” a 30-minute adventure designed for two people.

Located at 151 North Court Street, the business lists seasonal weekend hours of 1 to 9 p.m. Visitors should check game availability and reserve a time before heading out. escape-a-torium.com

Discover Lost World Caverns near Lewisburg

At Lost World Caverns, visitors can head below ground for a self-guided walk among stalactites and stalagmites.

The half-mile loop takes approximately 45 minutes to complete, with signs explaining the formations along the route. The cave stays around 52 degrees, so a light jacket and sturdy shoes are recommended.

Posted hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Memorial Day through Thanksgiving, with shorter hours during other seasons. Visitors should confirm operating conditions before traveling during heavy rain. www.lostworldcaverns.com

Go underground at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine

The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine offers a chance to explore the region’s mining history through an underground ride in a former mine.

The mine stays around 58 degrees, making a jacket a good idea even when temperatures outside are warmer. Admission also includes attractions at the adjacent Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia.

The underground tour provides a rainy-day activity, although the complex’s coal camp and Mountain Homestead include outdoor areas. The mine operates seasonally, generally from April into early November, so visitors should confirm tour availability before making the trip. beckley.org

Enjoy a free museum visit in Weston

The Museum of American Glass in West Virginia offers an indoor outing without an admission charge.

Located at 230 Main Avenue in Weston, the museum features thousands of examples of glassware and displays exploring the history of glass manufacturing. One unusual exhibit is the Lady Jane stained-glass dollhouse, a detailed creation with 13 rooms.

Posted weekend hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. The museum closes on select holidays. magwv.org

Explore Wheeling history at Oglebay’s museums

Oglebay Institute’s Mansion Museum and Glass Museum give visitors two indoor options in Wheeling.

The Mansion Museum features decorative arts and exhibits about Wheeling history and the Oglebay family. The Glass Museum showcases more than 4,000 examples of Wheeling-made glass and china.

Both museums list daily hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 4, 2026, followed by a holiday schedule. Admission is $10 for one museum or $15 for both. Children 17 and younger enter free when accompanied by an adult. oionline.com

Before heading out, check each attraction’s official website for current hours, ticket availability and temporary closures. Seasonal schedules and advance reservations can affect weekend plans.
