MOUNT CARBON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Raleigh County man has died following a head-on collision Wednesday morning on West Virginia Route 61 in Fayette County.
According to Fayette County Sheriff Jess McMullen, emergency responders were dispatched just after 7:30 a.m. on March 12 after a two-vehicle crash was reported in the Mount Carbon area.
Deputies, EMS personnel from Jan Care and General Ambulance, and firefighters from the Montgomery and Armstrong Creek Volunteer Fire Departments responded to the scene.
Investigators determined that a vehicle had veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another car.
The driver of the struck vehicle sustained minor injuries and was transported to Montgomery General Hospital.
The driver of the vehicle that crossed the centerline suffered possible life-threatening injuries and was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center, where he later died.
The deceased driver has been identified as Andrew Appel III, 55, of Beckley.
Authorities believe he may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash.
The accident remains under investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
