RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Raleigh County Commission has officially proclaimed September 2026 as “Raleigh County Goes Purple” Month to recognize National Recovery Month and raise awareness of mental health and substance use disorders.
The proclamation, signed by Commissioners Gregory A. Duckworth, Linda K. Epling and Daniel J. Hall, highlights September as a time to celebrate individuals in recovery while increasing awareness and understanding of addiction and mental health challenges.
According to the proclamation, the color purple symbolizes the ongoing struggle against opioid abuse affecting individuals, families, health care providers and law enforcement agencies across the country.
The commission also recognized the Raleigh County Goes Purple movement, founded by Tara Mayson, founder and executive director of The Hope Dealer Project. The initiative aims to raise awareness, support, inspire and empower those affected by substance use disorder.
Officials said Raleigh County Goes Purple is an awareness campaign focused on prevention, treatment and recovery resources available throughout the community while emphasizing the role local agencies play in addressing the opioid epidemic.
As part of the proclamation, the commission is encouraging residents to observe the month by participating in community programs and activities, wearing purple, lighting homes and businesses with purple lights, displaying purple ribbons or hearts, and finding other creative ways to show support for recovery awareness.
The proclamation was signed by Raleigh County Commission President Greg Duckworth on July 21, 2026.
