RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Raleigh County Republican Executive Committee held a special session on Monday, June 10, 2024, to address the passing of County Commission President David Tolliver. Tolliver served in many roles in Raleigh County, was an Army Veteran, a retired firefighter, and a beloved community member. Tolliver served as a County Commissioner since 2010.
The vacancy due to Tolliver’s passing after the primary election allows for County Executive Committees to nominate a candidate to the ballot in November to fulfill the unexpired term until 2028. The Republican Executive Committee called itself to order for a special session to consider the nomination. In the 2022 election, Tolliver defeated three opponents: Daniel Hall, Lucy Lester, and Robert Mooney. Though the Committee could consider any Republican residing in the same Magisterial District, the Committee considered the three opponents who ran for the position in 2022. After holding a closed-ballot election, Daniel Hall was selected by the Committee to be the Republican Candidate in the fall.
When asked for comment, Hall stated, “I am honored and humbled by my selection by the Committee. Dave (Tolliver) was a man I deeply respected, and filling his role in the county will be difficult, but I look forward to the challenge. Dave was someone I considered a friend and a great public servant. I hope to carry forward his love for our county, his conservative values, and his hard work ethic should I be successful in November. At this point, I will focus on mounting a winning campaign for November.”  Daniel Hall is a former member of the WV House of Delegates and the WV Senate, where he held the position of Majority Whip.
The County Commission has called for a special session tomorrow to elect a new president. The Commission’s next regular meeting will be held on June 18, 2024, when they may consider appointing a replacement for Tolliver. Per state code, the Commissioners must select a replacement within 30 days of the vacancy. The replacement must be of the same party as Tolliver, who was a Republican.
