ROANE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Roane County Schools is investigating an incident that occurred Wednesday morning, Feb. 25, 2026, after a second-grade student discharged a pepper spray container while riding a school bus to school.
According to district officials, the incident happened while the bus was en route.
Upon arrival at the school, nursing staff immediately met the bus and began assessing students who may have been exposed. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) was called to assist with evaluations.
School officials said all students on the bus were examined and treated as needed at the school.
No students required transport to a hospital. Some parents chose to pick up their children as a precaution.
The district stated that the safety and well-being of students and staff remains its highest priority and that the matter is being taken seriously.
Law enforcement has been notified and is involved in reviewing the incident. The situation will be addressed in accordance with district policy and applicable laws, according to the school system.
School leaders expressed appreciation for the quick response of the school nurse, staff and local emergency responders, as well as families for their patience and cooperation.
Officials said the district remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all students.
