Sectional baseball roundup 6/1: Independence, Oak Hill, Greenbrier East and Summers County pick up sectional wins

Independence 14, Liberty 0

Coal City – Hunter Schoolcraft held Liberty to just one hit as Independence defeated Liberty 14-0 in Coal City Tuesday to move into the Class AA Region 3, Section 2 winner’s bracket.

Atticus Goodson hit his fourth home run of the season while Michael McKinney went 2-for-3, driving in four runs.

Independence will host the winner of Shady Spring on Wednesday while Liberty will travel to the Nicholas County in what will be an elimination game.

Summers County 15, Greater Beckley 9

Beckley – Summers County scored eight runs in the second inning, upsetting the No. 2 seed Greater Beckley in the Class A Region 3, Section 1 tournament Tuesday in Beckley.

Logan Fox led the way for the Bobcats, going 3-for-5 and driving in three runs. Will Taylor also finished 3-for-3, driving in two runs.

Summers moves into the winner’s bracket and will travel to James Monroe on Wednesday while Greater Beckley falls into the loser’s bracket.

Greenbrier East 10, Princeton 0

Fairlea – Greenbrier East made easy work of Princeton, beating the Tigers 10-0 in five innings Tuesday night to open the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament in Fairlea.

The Spartans faced little resistance, scoring eight runs in the opening frame to take a dominant lead, never looking back.

Tanner Skidmore led the Spartans at the plate, going 2-for-3 and driving in four runs.

East moves into the winner’s bracket and will face Oak Hill Wednesday in Fairlea. Princeton will travel to Beckley today in an elimination game.

Oak Hill 11, Beckley 1

Oak Hill – Oak Hill scored four runs in the first inning and was never threatened, beating Beckley 11-1 in six innings Tuesday in the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament in Oak Hill.

Brad Lokant was stellar for Oak Hill, scattering seven hits across six innings, allowing just one run.

At the plate Ty Nelson led the way for the Red Devils, going 2-for-3 and driving in three runs. Zane Wolfe also added two hits, driving in a run.

Oak Hill advances to the winner’s bracket where it will face Greenbrier East on Wednesday in Fairlea. Beckley falls to the loser’s bracket and will host Princeton Wednesday in an elimination game.
