Independence 5, Shady Spring 1
Coal City – Independence scored five runs in the sixth inning to beat county rival Shady Spring 5-1 Saturday, winning the Class AA Region 3, Section 2 championship in the process.
The game was a pitcher’s duel throughout as both teams were scoreless until the sixth.
Shady drew first blood when Tyler Mackey scored on an error, but Indy tied it in the bottom of the frame. The decisive hit came when Cyrus Goodson crushed a two-run home run that gave Indy the lead.
On the mound, Cyrus’ brother Atticus pitched a complete game, striking out 12 and allowing just one hit.
Independence will host Bluefield in the Region 3 championship in a best-of-three series that will begin on June 14.
Oak Hill 3, Greenbrier East 2
Fairlea – Rallying from the loser’s bracket, Oak Hill beat Greenbrier East 3-2, winning the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 championship.
Oak Hill scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings but East answered in the bottom of the fifth with two to tie it. The Red Devils eventually took the lead in the seventh and held on for the win.
Brad Lokant picked up the win for Oak Hill, pitching a complete game. Ty Nelson led Oak Hill at the plate with three hits.
Oak Hill will play the Section 1 winner in a best-of-three series that starts on June 14.
James Monroe 11, Summers County 1
Lindside – For the second time this week James Monroe beat Summers County 11-1, winning the Class A Region 3, Section 1 tournament on Saturday.
Andrew Hazlewood was stellar at the plate, going 3-for-4, driving in three runs for the Mavs.
Connor Moore picked up the win for James Monroe, striking out 10 in five innings of work.
James Monroe will play the Section 2 winner in a best-of-three series that starts on June 14.
