KENTUCKY (LOOTPRESS) – U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been discharged from a rehabilitation center and will continue recovering at home after suffering a fall in mid-June.
In a statement released Thursday, the 84-year-old senator thanked those who supported him during his recovery.
“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff,” McConnell said.
McConnell said he will continue working from home but did not indicate when he plans to return to Washington. The Senate is expected to begin a five-week recess in the coming days.
Questions about McConnell’s health have persisted since his June 14 hospitalization, after which he remained out of the public eye for several weeks. His staff has largely declined to provide details about his condition, prompting calls for greater transparency from some officials, including Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
Last month, McConnell revealed he had been hospitalized after briefly losing consciousness following a fall.
“My doctors have confirmed that I didn’t break any bones or suffer a concussion,” McConnell said in a July 12 statement. “I didn’t have a heart attack or a stroke. I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages. But I was briefly unconscious and was taken to the hospital. While receiving excellent care over the past several weeks, I’ve also had to deal with a mild case of pneumonia.”
Since being hospitalized, McConnell has missed 51 Senate floor votes and is also expected to miss the vote to confirm Todd Blanche as U.S. attorney general if it is held this week.
McConnell, who announced earlier this year that he will retire when his current term ends in January, has experienced several health setbacks in recent years. In February, he spent a week in the hospital with flu-like symptoms. In 2023, he suffered a concussion after falling at a hotel and later experienced multiple public episodes in which he froze while speaking, raising concerns about his health. He also fractured his shoulder in a fall at his Kentucky home in 2019.
At 84, McConnell is among the oldest members of the U.S. Senate, alongside Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, 92, and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., 84.
