CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The longest-serving senator in West Virginia history was honored by her colleagues in the Senate on Thursday.
The Senate adopted SR2 on Thursday morning, recognizing the dedicated public service of the Honorable Donna J. Boley (R-Pleasants, 03).
Boley was appointed by Gov. Arch A. Moore Jr. to fill a vacancy in the Senate on May 14, 1985.
Since her election to that unexpired term in 1986, Boley has gone on to win re-election nine times and is currently the longest continually serving state Senator in West Virginia history.
From 1990 to 1996, Boley was Senate Minority Leader. In 1991 and 1992, she was also the only Republican in the 34-member Senate, making her the minority chairwoman for every Senate committee.
Many of Sen. Boley’s colleagues gave speeches recognizing her for her service.
“I just want to thank you all for the speeches,’ Boley said. “I’ve enjoyed working with each and every one of you, it was a lonely time there for a while in ’91 and ’92”, Boley said referring to her time as the only Republican senator in the Senate at the time.
“I’m so glad that you’re all here and I look forward to serving with you for another four years,” Boley concluded.
The resolution was adopted on a 30-0 vote with four members being absent.
