(LOOTPRESS) – Health officials say shredded iceberg lettuce served at some Taco Bell restaurants has been linked to an ongoing multistate outbreak of Cyclospora, a parasite that causes severe gastrointestinal illness.
According to health investigators, the lettuce was supplied by Taylor Farms and distributed to select Taco Bell locations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and state health departments are continuing to investigate the outbreak and trace the source of the contamination.Â
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, loss of appetite, bloating, and weight loss. Symptoms typically begin about a week after consuming contaminated food and can last for several weeks if left untreated.Â
As a precaution, Taco Bell has removed certain fresh ingredients from affected restaurants while the investigation continues. Health officials have not advised consumers to avoid all lettuce, and the investigation remains ongoing to determine whether additional products or suppliers are involved.Â
The White House said Thursday that it is closely monitoring the outbreak and is working with federal health agencies to identify the source and help prevent additional illnesses.Â
Anyone who develops persistent diarrhea lasting more than a few days—especially after recently eating fresh produce or restaurant salads—is urged to contact a healthcare provider. The illness can be treated with prescription antibiotics once it is properly diagnosed.Â
