MATOAKA, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Mercer County Public Service District has announced it will conduct a smoke testing survey of the Matoaka sewer system from May 1 through July 1, 2025.
Smoke testing is a standard method used to detect breaks or defects in sewer lines. During the process, non-toxic, odorless, white-to-gray smoke will be introduced into the sewer system to help crews identify potential issues.
Residents may notice smoke coming from manholes, vent stacks, or holes in the ground.
Officials stress that the smoke is harmless — it does not stain, carries no odor, and poses no fire hazard.
The smoke should not enter homes or businesses unless there is defective plumbing or dry drain traps.
If smoke does appear indoors, residents are advised to contact the Public Service District at 304-223-4230.
