CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) has reduced the speed limit along the Interstate 64 and Interstate 77 corridor in Charleston as part of several safety improvements ahead of construction on the Eugene Carter Bridge next year.
The speed limit has been lowered from 60 mph to 50 mph, effective immediately. New speed limit signs were installed Thursday, October 22, 2026.
The reduced speed limit applies to northbound and westbound I-77/I-64 beginning near the 35th and 36th Street bridges, southbound I-77 beginning at Westmoreland Road, and eastbound I-64 between the Montrose Drive and Oakwood Road exits.
Beginning Monday, October 26, crews are scheduled to install high-friction pavement treatments at several locations, weather permitting. The work will take place during daytime hours, and drivers should expect minor delays.
Additional warning signs have also been installed to identify sharp curves and remind motorists of the reduced speed limit.
WVDOT is also considering ways to increase the height of barrier walls in the area and plans to conduct a traffic study of the corridor.
The department is coordinating with West Virginia State Police and the Charleston Police Department to increase law enforcement presence and enforce the new speed limit.
Motorists are encouraged to follow posted speed limits, avoid distractions and use caution when traveling through the interchange.
