Cabell Midland 3, George Washington 2
Charleston – Defending Class AAA state baseball champion Cabell Midland won its second straight championship with a dramatic 3-2 win over George Washington at Go-Mart Park Saturday.
Down one run, the Patriots placed runners at first and second in the top of the seventh inning with one out forcing a pitching change by the Knights.
A rip by Chuck Kelley was then snagged by Kenyon Collins at shortstop who double off the runner at second base for the final out of the game.
Although the game was tight, Midland never trailed in the contest.
Luke Samuel gave the defending champs the lead with an RBI-single in the first inning before the Patriots evened the game in the second. Three singles and a walk to Kelly tied the game 1-1.
The Knights regained the lead in the bottom of the second on a double from Landon Nida, scoring Bryce Alfrey who doubled two batters earlier. Ray Ray Williams’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Knights a two-run cushion and was the eventual game winner.
Abe Fenwick doubled to open the sixth for George Washington and advanced to third on a fielding error. Fenwick scored on a sac fly from Eli Smith, but the Patriots could not score any further runs the rest of the way.
Jared Nethercutt pitched six and a third innings to get the win, while Aden McCormill came in to record the final two out and earn the save.
The AAA All-tournament team consisted of Kenyon Collins, Luke Samuels, Landon Nida, Ray Ray Williams and Jared Nethercutt from Cabell Midland, along with Chuck Kelley, Corbin Dixon, Bryson Hoff, Abe Fenwick and Eli Smith from GW.
