Class AAA Girls Semifinals

George Washington and Washington both pulled of upsets Thursday night in the semifinal round at the Class AAA Girls State Soccer Tournament at Paul Cline Stadium.
No. 4 seed GW stunned two-time defending champion and No. 1 seed Morgantown in the opener. After playing through regulation time and two overtime periods to a scoreless draw, George Washington knocked off the Mohigans 5-3 on kicks from the mark.
Emma Cipoletti, Ellie Pray, Ella Chips, Isabella Smith and Trinity Hodge tallied the five winners for the Patriots.
Washington continued the upset trend by knocking of the No. 2 seed Parkersburg South, 3-0.
Jurnee Vrobel led the day with a hat trick, scoring her first goal in the 19th minute, assisted by Ayla Kidd for a 1-0 lead at halftime. The junior standout scored again in the 51st minute and sealed the win with a goal in the 72 minute of play.
The “Battle of the Patriots” for the girls state title will be Saturday following the boys championship match which starts at 10:30 a.m.
Class AAA Boys Semifinals
Hurricane 2, Martinsburg 0
The No. 1 seed and top-ranked team in Class AAA boys, Hurricane, scored two times early in the match and held on to beat No. 4 seed Martinsburg 2-0.
The win sends the Redskins to the championship match where it will face Beckley. The Flying Eagles beat Wheeling Park, 3-2 in the second overtime on a shot by A.J. Bishop.
Both Hurricane goals came on set pieces and off of the foot of junior Harris Coulter. Kellon Schmidt was the first beneficiary when he knocked in a header in the third minute of play.
Seven minutes later, Zayden Ambrose connected with Coulter for the eventual winning margin.
The Flying Eagles and the Redskins met to open the 2024 soccer season with Hurricane taking a 2-0 win.
Game time Saturday is 10:30 a.m. at Paul Cline Stadium.
