WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) — Federal authorities have released new details about the man accused of carrying out an ambush-style shooting this week that left two West Virginia National Guard members critically wounded just blocks from the White House. The attack, which unfolded Tuesday evening near the Farragut West Metro station, has now prompted a federal terrorism probe as investigators dig deeper into the background and possible motives of the alleged gunman.
An Afghan National Admitted to the U.S. After the 2021 Withdrawal
The suspect, identified by law enforcement as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is an Afghan national who entered the United States in 2021 following the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan. He arrived through one of the federal resettlement programs designed for Afghans who assisted U.S. operations, and he was later granted asylum earlier this year.
Officials familiar with his background say Lakanwal previously worked with U.S.-backed security forces in Afghanistan, including units supported by American intelligence agencies during the conflict. Federal investigators are now reviewing his service history, associates, and vetting records as part of the broader inquiry.
Details of the Shooting
According to charging documents, the attack began when Lakanwal allegedly approached two West Virginia National Guard soldiers who were walking near the Metro entrance. The shooter fired multiple rounds from a .357 revolver, striking both soldiers before additional Guard members in the area returned fire. Lakanwal was shot several times, subdued, and taken into federal custody after receiving medical treatment.
Both soldiers — who had reportedly been sworn into federal service less than a day earlier — were rushed to nearby hospitals in critical condition. Officials have warned that additional charges could be filed depending on their medical progress.
Lakanwal currently faces multiple counts of assault with intent to kill while armed, along with firearm charges. Prosecutors have stated that these charges may be upgraded as the investigation continues.
FBI Now Leading the Investigation
The FBI and federal counterterrorism units are now leading the investigation, with attention focused on whether the attack was planned, inspired, or coordinated. Authorities executed warrants on the suspect’s residence in Washington state, where they seized digital devices and began interviewing individuals connected to him both inside and outside the United States.
As of Thursday, investigators have not publicly identified a clear motive. Officials say they are exploring all possibilities — from personal grievance to ideological extremism — while stressing that early stages of federal investigations often leave many unanswered questions.
A Growing Political Flashpoint
The attack has already become the center of a national political debate, rekindling questions about vetting protocols for Afghan evacuees and the handling of intelligence-linked partner forces. Several federal officials acknowledged that the suspect’s history will likely intensify scrutiny of post-withdrawal resettlement programs.
State leaders in West Virginia issued statements praising the heroism of the wounded Guardsmen and urging federal officials to provide full transparency as the investigation develops.
Community and Military Response
The West Virginia National Guard has asked for prayers and privacy for the families of the injured soldiers. Both remain in critical condition, and updates are expected in the coming days as doctors evaluate long-term prognosis.
Citizens and veterans organizations across the state have already begun organizing support efforts for the families of the Guardsmen.
