MINGO COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Mingo County judge has sentenced Timothy Kennedy to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the 2023 fatal shooting of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard.
Kennedy was convicted in May on all charges stemming from the June 2, 2023, incident that claimed Sgt. Maynard’s life. During sentencing, Judge Butcher imposed a life sentence without mercy for the first-degree murder conviction, meaning Kennedy will never be eligible for parole.
The jury declined to recommend mercy.
In addition to the life sentence, Kennedy received consecutive sentences on the remaining convictions, including:
- Attempted murder of civilian Benjamin Baldwin: 3 to 15 years
- Attempted murder of Trooper Johnson: 3 to 15 years
- Armed robbery of Sgt. Maynard: 50 years
- Disarming a police officer: 1 to 5 years
Because the sentences will be served consecutively, Kennedy will serve the additional prison terms after his life sentence.
Sgt. Maynard was killed on June 2, 2023, while responding to a call in Mingo County. Kennedy was found guilty on all charges following a jury trial earlier this year.
