CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Raleigh County Circuit Judge Todd A. Kirby has officially filed to run for the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, seeking the Division 1 seat in the May election for the unexpired term left vacant following the death of Justice Armstead.
In announcing his candidacy, Kirby said, “Today I have officially filed to be on the ballot this coming May for the unexpired term left open due to the unfortunate passing of Justice Armstead.”
He highlighted his background in child welfare and the court system, saying, “I have the unique experience within our abuse and neglect system to provide common sense solutions to the crisis we are currently experiencing in our foster care system.”
Kirby cited his work as a delegate, guardian ad litem, attorney, circuit judge, and prosecutor as providing him with a broad perspective on these issues.
“My time as a delegate, guardian ad litem, attorney, circuit judge and the time spent prosecuting these cases gives me a unique perspective that is desperately needed at this time,” he said.
He also noted the personal motivation behind his focus on child welfare, adding, “My two young children are also a huge source of my passion for this vital issue.”
Addressing his judicial philosophy, Kirby emphasized constitutional principles, stating, “My understanding and great respect for the basic truth that our rights come from God, not from Charleston and not from Washington D.C., should give the voters of West Virginia peace of mind that if elected I will respect their Constitutional rights.”
He added, “My only loyalty is to the people of this state, the rule of law and the Constitution.”
Kirby said he plans to campaign across the state in the coming months.
“I look forward to continuing to speak with West Virginians from across the Mountain State and from every walk of life over the next few months to prove to them why I am the best candidate for this position and why I believe so strongly in the future of this state,” he said, concluding with, “Thank you and God bless the great state of West Virginia.”
