WASHINGTON, D.C. (LOOTPRESS) – Millions of student loan borrowers will see their debts forgiven under programs previously blocked by the Trump administration.
The news comes following a new agreement between the administration, the U.S. Department of Education, and the American Federation of Teachers.
The deal applies to borrowers enrolled in two repayment plans: the Pay as You Earn plan and the Income Contingent Repayment plan.
More than 2.5 million people are expected to qualify for loan forgiveness under these programs.
Winston Berkman-Breen, legal director for the nonprofit Protect Borrowers, praised the agreement, saying, “The U.S. Department of Education has agreed to follow the law and deliver Congressionally mandated affordable payments and debt relief to hard-working public service workers across the country,” according to CNBC News.
Earlier this year, Trump had halted these student loan forgiveness programs after the American Federation of Teachers filed a lawsuit, claiming the administration blocked federal student loan holders from accessing the programs.
