DAVIS, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The much-anticipated fall foliage season in Tucker County, West Virginia is fast approaching, with the best variety of colors predicted between September 25 and October 25. Due to the county’s diverse landscape, visitors can enjoy an extended season, as fall colors begin in the higher elevations and gradually move to lower areas.
To help visitors plan their leaf-peeping trip, optimal viewing times are:
● September 25 – October 5: Areas above 4,000 feet in elevation (Bald Knob and Bear Rocks Preserve)
● October 1 – 10: Areas between 3,500 to 4,000 feet in elevation (Bald Knob, Bear Rocks Preserve and Olson Observation Tower)
● October 5 – 15: Areas between 2,500 to 3,500 feet in elevation (Table Rock Overlook, Pace Point and Lindy Point)
● October 10 – 25: Areas between 1,500 to 2,500 feet in elevation (Parsons Areas, Blackwater Canyon and Otter Creek Wilderness)
The suggested dates offer the best viewing opportunities, but nature’s timing can be unpredictable. To fully enjoy the transition from vibrant greens and yellows to fiery reds and oranges, consider visiting slightly earlier to catch the full spectrum of colors and ensure the leaves haven’t fallen yet.

Hikers can traverse popular trails like Lindy Point, which provides panoramic views of Blackwater Canyon, or visit Dolly Sods Wilderness Area for a scenic trek to Bear Rocks Preserve.
Another prime spot is Blackwater Falls State Park, where the iconic Blackwater Falls is set against a backdrop of autumn foliage. Visitors can climb the historic Olson Fire Tower for a 360-degree view.
For unique vantage points, ride the scenic chairlift at Canaan Valley Resort State Park, which offers access to one of the highest points in the county, Bald Knob. Or, for a more adventurous experience, saddle up for a horseback ride.
The changing colors of autumn are caused by a natural process. As the days shorten and temperatures drop, trees prepare for winter dormancy, triggering pigments like anthocyanin that create the reds, oranges and yellows of fall. Higher elevations see these changes earlier due to cooler temperatures.
While light and temperature primarily drive the timing of fall foliage, weather conditions like strong winds and heavy rain can impact the display by prematurely stripping leaves. Calm, dry weather during peak periods provides the best conditions for leaf-peeping.
