MASON COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – Authorities in Mason County are investigating a severe animal cruelty case after a dog was allegedly shot and brutally stomped on, leaving it to suffer for hours before being euthanized by deputies.
Incident Details
According to Sheriff’s Office reports, Mason County Shelter Manager Denee Sidenstricker contacted the Sheriff of Mason County on February 7, 2025, with information about the gruesome abuse of a dog in the Palm Lane residential area of Leon.
The incident reportedly took place on December 17, 2025, when a male and female suspect allegedly shot the dog before repeatedly stomping on its head while it was still alive.
Witness & Investigation
A witness provided a statement to authorities, confirming the graphic abuse. She also reported that cell phone audio captured the dog’s cries of pain despite poor recording quality.
Dog Found Alive After Hours of Suffering
Cpl. J. Peterson and Deputy C. Connor responded to the scene and discovered the injured dog in a wooded area. Shockingly, the animal was still alive and breathing—nearly five hours after the initial attack.
Due to the dog’s severe suffering, Deputies decided to euthanize the animal immediately after consulting with the animal shelter.
Ongoing Investigation
The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case, and potential criminal charges are expected. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward. Deputies did not release the female suspect’s name. It’s unknown if she was arrested at this story’s time.
