(LOOTPRESS) – Total U.S. coal exports decreased from June to July by -16.85%. Metallurgical coal exports decreased month over month by -20.3% and total thermal coal exports declined by -12.6%. Year to date, compared to the same seven months of 2020, total U.S. coal exports are up +23%. Met coal exports are up by +4.2% and thermal coal export shipments are up +52.4%.
U.S. met coal exports to Europe decreased by -15.7% month over month. Compared to the same time last year, met coal shipments to Europe are off by -16.2%. U.S. shipments of met coal to North America increased from June by +29.3%. Compared to 2020, U.S. exports of met coal to North America are up by +2.2%. Shipment of U.S. met coal to South America decreased from the previous month by -13.1%. Compared to the same seven months of last year, total U.S. met coal exports to South America are off by -4.6%. U.S. met coal exports to Japan dropped substantially from June by -62.3%. Compared to last year, total U.S. met coal exports to Japan are off by -11.6%. Shipments of met coal to South Korea increased by 100% month over month (no exports to South Korea were reported in June). Year to date, U.S. met coal exports to South Korea are off by -69.3%. Met coal exports to India declined from June to July by -35.4%. Compared to 2020, total U.S. met coal exports to India are off by -28.4%. Met coal shipments to China decreased from June by -21.5%. Compared to the same seven months of 2020, total U.S. coal exports are to China are up >100%.
Shipments of U.S. thermal coal to Europe increased +24% month over month. Compared to the same time last year, total U.S. thermal coal shipments to Europe have increased by +78.1%. U.S. thermal coal exports to North America declined from June by -15.2%. Compared to 2020, total thermal coal shipments to North America have increased by +19.1%. Exports of thermal coal to South America declined month over month by -43.1%. Total thermal coal exports to South America are off by -10.6% compared to 2020. U.S. shipments of thermal coal to Japan also decreased from June by -69.3%. Compared to the same seven months of 2020, total U.S. thermal coal exports to Japan have increased +69.5%. Shipments of U.S. thermal coal to South Korea increased month over month by +39%. Compared to last year, total thermal coal shipments to South Korea are off -15.1%. Thermal coal shipments to India declined from June by -47.9%. Compared to 2020, total U.S. thermal coal shipments to India are up +96.4%. Thermal coal exports to China increased month over month by +28.3%. Compared to the same time in 2020, total U.S. thermal coal shipments to China are up +>100%.
Average reported met coal export prices increased month over month by +14.3%. (+$19.53 /ton) The average reported thermal coal export price increased from June by +7.5% (+$4.24 /ton).
Quantified by export port / export customs district, met coal exports from increased month over month from Baltimore by +8.9%, Hampton Roads met exports decreased from June by -17.3%, exports of met coal from Mobile declined by -68.9%. Met coal exports from New Orleans increased by >100% from the previous month (no met coal exports were reported from New Orleans in June). Met coal shipments from other ports / districts (Buffalo, Detroit, El Paso, Houston, Laredo, New York, San Diego, San Francisco, Savannah, Seattle, Wilmington, Cleveland, Charleston, Los Angeles) increased by +18.2% month over month. No met coal shipments have been reported from Philadelphia this year.
Compared to the same time last year, total met coal exports from Baltimore are up +11.89%, Hampton Roads +3.1%, Mobile +1.2%, New Orleans +73.7% and other ports / districts +6.6%.
U.S. thermal coal exports from Baltimore declined from June by -23.7%, Hampton Roads thermal shipments increased +6.5% month over month. No export shipments of thermal coal were reported from Mobile in July. Thermal coal exports from New Orleans declined slightly month over month by -0.1%. Thermal coal exports from the other ports and districts decreased by -70.2% from June.
Compared to the same seven months of 2020, total thermal coal shipments from Baltimore are up +61.9%, Hampton Roads thermal exports are off -10.2%, thermal coal shipments from Mobile are down -38.9%. Exports of thermal coal from New Orleans have increased >100% compared to the same time last year and shipments of export thermal coal have increased +11.5% from the other ports and districts.
