BECKLEY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – With dangerously cold temperatures, wind chills, and winter weather advisories in effect across southern West Virginia this weekend, a warming shelter is opening in Beckley to provide refuge for residents in need.
The Beckley Warming Center will open Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. at the Beckley Community United Methodist Church, 217 South Heber Street, in the lower-level fellowship hall.
The facility will remain open through 7:00 a.m.
Organizers say anyone needing a warm, safe place to shelter overnight is welcome.
The opening coincides with active advisories issued by the National Weather Service as a winter system pushes through the region.
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect through 1:00 p.m. Sunday for the Beckley area, with accumulating snow and slick travel conditions likely.
A Cold Weather Advisory also remains in place Sunday morning through Monday morning, highlighting the risk from very low temperatures and dangerous wind chills.
Forecasters expect highs near freezing followed by overnight lows around 10°F Saturday night, with additional daytime temperatures struggling well below average.
On Sunday, highs may only reach the mid-teens, with wind chill values dropping as low as –7°F or lower in the afternoon and nighttime wind chills continuing to feel frigid. Sunday night lows could dip near 4°F with wind chills around –8°F or lower.
