CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau today announced that West Virginia American Water is sponsoring the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships Volunteer Program. The Pro Road National Championships presented by Spilman Thomas & Battle are scheduled for June 16-21, 2026, in Charleston.
“Volunteers are a critical component of USA Cycling’s Pro Road Championships here in Charleston. We quite literally can’t host this event without them,” said President/CEO of the CVB. “We also can’t do it without engaged community partners like West Virginia American Water. This corporate partnership elevates the volunteer experience, as well as the race itself.”
West Virginia American Water Course Marshals are volunteers stationed at key locations along the course who direct riders, monitor course and rider safety, ensure fair play, and manage pedestrian and bike traffic. Working as a Course Marshal puts fans on-the-course and right by the action, where they can enjoy all the excitement, while helping keep the riders and spectators safe.
“West Virginia American Water is proud to support the volunteers who make the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships possible,” said Scott Wyman, President, West Virginia American Water. “This event brings incredible energy and excitement to Charleston. We believe investing in community-driven events like this helps build a strong, connected city – one that residents are proud of and visitors want to experience.”
Course Marshal Duties include:
- Directing the riders in the correct direction.
- Assisting police with road closures.
- Keeping public vehicles from entering the course when the race is passing.
- Keeping spectators, children, pets, and other hazards off the course.
- Volunteers receive a whistle and a branded volunteer shirt.
- All shifts will be provided with a meal and water throughout the day.
- All shifts are outdoors. It is recommended to bring a lawn chair, water, and sun protection.
In 2025, USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships presented by Spilman Thomas & Battle generated an estimated $6.9 million economic impact. Visitor spending was up 14% and represented 13% of all spending in the city during the event. The event supported 1,030 jobs and generated $591,000 in local taxes.
“Our volunteers represent the very best of our Capital City—showing up, pitching in, and helping deliver an exceptional experience for everyone involved,” said Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin. “We appreciate West Virginia American Water’s support of the USA Cycling Pro Road National Championships as the Volunteer Program Sponsor, and their investment in the people who help make this event successful.”
Four-hundred, twenty-two riders from 49 states competed in Time Trials, Criterium and Road Race in 2025. Forty-six National Champions were crowned in Charleston, including gold medal Olympian Kristen Faulkner who won the Elite Women’s Road Race in 2024 and 2025.
The 2026 USA Cycling Pro Road Championships are the third of a five-year commitment from USA Cycling to hold the annual national championship event in Charleston.
