CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — College basketball is coming to the Capital City in a big way as West Virginia University and Wake Forest University are set to clash in the 2025 edition of Holiday Hoopfest, presented by the Charleston Convention & Visitors Bureau. The game will take place on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the Charleston Coliseum.
The neutral-site matchup, organized by the Gazelle Group, will bring together two storied programs in what promises to be one of the top early-season nonconference showdowns. A return game is scheduled for the 2026–2027 season in Greensboro, North Carolina, at First Horizon Coliseum (exact date to be announced).
Charleston Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said the event will be a boost for the city’s economy and community spirit.
“We are thrilled to welcome WVU and Wake Forest to Charleston for the 2025 edition of Holiday Hoopfest! With such a strong WVU fanbase throughout our city and the region, this game is sure to energize our Capital City,” said Goodwin. “Events like this bring excitement, visitors, and shine a national spotlight on our community.”
Tim Brady, President & CEO of the Charleston CVB, echoed that sentiment.
“Hosting this game is a major tourism draw,” Brady said. “It brings WVU and Wake Forest fans to town during a very vibrant time in December—a perfect moment to showcase everything Charleston has to offer.”
The game marks the 11th overall meeting between the Mountaineers and the Demon Deacons, with WVU holding a 7-3 advantage, including a legendary double-overtime victory in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. This will be their fourth matchup on a neutral court.
WVU Head Coach Ross Hodge said the opportunity was too good to pass up.
“It’s been a long time since our team played in Charleston,” Hodge said. “Wake Forest is a strong ACC opponent, and we’re excited to compete in front of our southern West Virginia fanbase.”
WVU Athletic Director Wren Baker praised the neutral-site series as a win for both programs.
“This matchup promises the atmosphere of postseason play,” said Baker. “Thanks to the Gazelle Group, fans of both teams get to experience high-level college basketball early in the season.”
Presale tickets for Holiday Hoopfest will go on sale Tuesday, September 2, with public sales beginning Friday, September 5. Tip-off time and TV details will be announced later. Fans can follow updates on X (formerly Twitter) @holihoopfest.
