CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia House of Delegates has introduced HB 2938, a bill that would allow the sale, distribution, and possession of ivermectin without a prescription.
Under the proposed legislation, pharmacies and pharmacists would be permitted to sell or dispense ivermectin over the counter, eliminating the requirement for a doctor’s prescription.
Supporters argue that making ivermectin more accessible could provide alternative treatment options, while opponents raise concerns about potential misuse and safety risks.
The bill is currently under consideration in the West Virginia Legislature.
Ivermectin is a medication primarily used to treat parasitic infections in both humans and animals. It is FDA-approved for conditions such as intestinal strongyloidiasis (a parasitic infection of the intestines) and onchocerciasis (river blindness). In veterinary medicine, it is commonly used to prevent heartworm disease and treat parasites in livestock and pets.
Ivermectin works by paralyzing and killing parasites, preventing them from reproducing. It is available in tablet, topical, and injectable forms, depending on the condition being treated.
