CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Coal Association applauded the Trump Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for finalizing the Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for the Steam Electric Power Generating Point Source Category – Deadline Extensions Rule. The rule provides much-needed compliance flexibility for America’s coal-fired electric generating units, ensuring that West Virginia’s coal fleet can continue to power our homes, businesses, and industries while supporting thousands of good-paying jobs.
“Our state’s coal plants are among the most reliable and efficient in the nation, providing the 24/7 baseload power that keeps our economy running,” said Chris Hamilton, President of the West Virginia Coal Association. “This action by the Trump EPA strikes a responsible balance between environmental protection and energy reliability, helping to preserve both the jobs of our workers and the affordability of the nation’s electricity supply.”
The rule extends compliance timelines under the 2020 Steam Electric Effluent Limitation Guidelines (ELG) revisions, recognizing the need for plant operators to complete complex technology upgrades without threatening grid reliability or forcing premature plant retirements.
“Coal-based power continues to be a cornerstone of West Virginia’s economy,” Hamilton said. “By allowing a reasonable timeframe for deployment of new wastewater treatment technologies, the EPA is supporting continued investment in our state’s energy infrastructure and protecting the livelihoods of the families that depend on it.”
Tens of thousands of West Virginians are directly employed in coal mining and coal-fired generation, with thousands more supported through related industries such as rail transportation, equipment manufacturing, and plant maintenance.
“The leadership shown by President Trump’s EPA reflects a strong commitment to American energy security and common-sense regulation,” Hamilton added. “This rule helps ensure that West Virginia coal will continue lighting our homes, fueling our industries, and driving prosperity for generations to come.”
