KINGWOOD, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A miner who died in a mining accident at the Mettiki F Mine in Tucker County has been identified.
Joseph “Joey” Dane Mitchell, 25, of Kingwood, West Virginia, died Thursday, November 6, 2025, as the result of a mining accident.

Born on October 23, 2000, in Morgantown, Mitchell was the son of Joseph Leroy Mitchell and Stephanie Dawson.
A 2020 graduate of Preston High School, he worked as a scoop operator at Mettiki F Mines in Tucker County. Friends and family said he was proud of his work and known for his dedication and willingness to take on any task.
Mitchell was also known for his love of demolition derbies and could often be found in the garage working on derby cars. He enjoyed football and basketball, whether playing or watching, and was remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make others smile.
He is survived by his parents; brother, Zachary Mitchell; grandmothers, Barbara Myers of Morgantown and Shirley Petitt of South Dakota; girlfriend, Madison Murray; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and his best friend, Bryson Valentine. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gary and Patty Mitchell.
Family and friends will be received at Kingwood Funeral Home, 295 S. Price St., Wednesday, November 12, from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Old Kingwood Pike in Morgantown.
