WOOD COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The Wood County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to prepare for approaching winter weather this weekend.
Officials say forecasted conditions could create hazardous roadways, reduce visibility, and lead to possible disruptions to power and essential services.
The National Weather Service in Charleston says confidence continues to increase in a significant winter storm to bring at least moderate impacts from snow this weekend.
The National Weather Service says the best potential for significant snowfall has become more centered over the area and more widespread. Snow totals are still uncertain.
The Sheriff’s Office is advising residents to limit travel during periods of heavy snowfall. For those who must be on the roads, officials recommend slowing down, increasing following distance, and avoiding sudden braking or acceleration.
Drivers are also encouraged to use headlights at all times during snowfall and to ensure vehicles are winter-ready, including the use of winter tires.
All snow and ice should be cleared from windows, mirrors, lights, and roofs before driving.
Authorities strongly recommend that motorists keep a winter emergency kit in their vehicles.
Suggested items include blankets, warm clothing, food, water, a flashlight, a phone charger, and traction aids such as sand or cat litter.
Residents are also encouraged to prepare their homes for winter conditions by stocking enough food, water, medications, and essential supplies to last several days in case travel becomes unsafe or power outages occur. Non-perishable foods, baby supplies, and pet food should be included.
Drivers are reminded that if a vehicle begins to skid, they should remain calm, ease off the accelerator, avoid braking, and steer gently in the direction of the skid until control is regained.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to stay informed through local weather updates and official communications and to check on elderly neighbors, individuals with disabilities, and others who may need assistance during severe winter weather.
