CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) — The Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia announced Monday that it will enforce stricter reliability standards for two major electricity utilities, Monongahela Power Co. and The Potomac Edison Co., aiming to reduce service interruptions for customers statewide.
The decision comes after the utilities proposed maintaining their current targets for reducing outages over the next five years, citing customer satisfaction with their performance. However, the Commission rejected this approach, emphasizing the need for improved reliability.
“The targets are intended to set goals for improved electric reliability in West Virginia,” the PSC stated. “The Commission is not satisfied with the frequency and length of outages experienced by West Virginia customers.”
In its ruling, the PSC mandated a 2% improvement in service reliability and outlined potential measures the utilities could adopt to achieve the new targets.
The utilities are required to file progress reports by May 1, 2027, enabling the Commission to evaluate their compliance and consider future targets.
