CHARLESTON, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Board of Education has adopted a resolution urging state lawmakers and the Governor to take action to stabilize the Public Employees Insurance Agency (PEIA), citing its importance to the state’s public education system.
The resolution, passed on May 14, 2025, emphasizes that PEIA provides essential healthcare coverage for West Virginia’s teachers, school staff, and administrators.
The Board said maintaining a stable and affordable insurance system is critical to recruiting and retaining qualified personnel in public schools.
“A stable and sustainable PEIA is essential to recruiting and retaining qualified educators and school personnel to serve the children in West Virginia’s public schools,” the resolution states.
The Board noted that recent financial challenges within PEIA have led to rising costs for public employees, directly affecting their take-home pay and placing additional strain on educators and staff.
These challenges, according to the resolution, pose a threat to the quality and stability of the public education system.
“All fifty-five county boards of education have passed resolutions supporting the stabilization of PEIA,” the Board highlighted, reinforcing the widespread concern among local education leaders.
The resolution calls on the West Virginia Legislature and Governor to act swiftly to make PEIA financially sustainable and affordable.
The Board also voted to send copies of the resolution to state leadership, including Governor Patrick Morrisey, Senate President Randy Smith, and House Speaker Roger Hanshaw.
