West Virginia State University Day of Giving Challenge set for March 17-18

INSTITUTE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – West Virginia State University’s (WVSU) annual Day of Giving Challenge will take place over a 24-hour period starting at noon on Tuesday, March 17, and continuing through noon on Wednesday, March 18, with a goal of raising $500,000 to support student success.

The theme for this year’s challenge is “135 Years of Yellow Jacket Pride” and coincides with the university’s Founders Day on March 17.

In addition to the goal of raising $500,000 the university also has a participation goal of 250 people giving in support of the Day of Giving Challenge.

“Our annual Day of Giving Challenge is even more significant this year as West Virginia State University is celebrating 135 years of impact and academic excellence,” said WVSU President Ericke S. Cage. “The generous and sustained support of our donors throughout our history has created countless opportunities for students to pursue their dreams of a college education, and has enabled the university to continue to grow and serve the needs of the state and region.”

The university and the WVSU Foundation host the annual Day of Giving Challenge to support scholarships as well as student activities such as athletics and special projects.

This year’s Day of Giving comes at an important time as the university is currently engaged in a $25 million capital campaign.

“Every gift to West Virginia State University is an investment in opportunity, innovation, and the future of our students,” said WVSU Vice President for University Advancement and President of the WVSU Foundation Trey Jones. “This year on our Day of Giving it is even more meaningful as all funds raised also go toward our State of Tomorrow Capital Campaign which is opening doors and empowering the next generation of leaders across West Virginia and beyond.”

The Day of Giving will also feature the opportunity to donate to each of the four colleges at the university, the College of Arts and Humanities, the College of Business and Social Sciences, the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the College of Professional Studies.

In addition, this year’s Day of Giving Challenge features a Senior Class Campaign. Graduating WVSU seniors who make donations of $25 or more to support the WVSU Student Emergency Fund will receive a special philanthropy cord that can be worn at the university’s spring commencement in May.

During the past year more than half of all WVSU students received scholarships, loans and grant support. Without these financial resources many students would not be able to continue their education.

A special Day of Giving donation website will open on March 17. Those interested in giving in advance may do so now at https://connect.wvstateu.edu/foundation/give-now.

For more information about the Day of Giving Challenge or giving to WVSU, contact Belinda Fuller, assistant vice president for alumni relations and annual giving, at (304) 766-3387 or bfuller@wvstateu.edu.
