FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) has announced the passing of Gary Ray, a longtime educator, coach, and former executive director of the organization who also served as a member of the Fayette County Board of Education representing the Plateau District.
In a statement, the WVSSAC said it was “sad to share the news of the passing of Gary Ray, a longtime educator, coach and former Executive Director of the WVSSAC.”
Ray joined the WVSSAC in 2001 as assistant executive director and later served as executive director from 2007 to 2016.
Over a career that spanned more than four decades in education and athletics, Ray served students and schools across West Virginia in a variety of roles, including teacher, coach, athletic director and principal.
His work in education and school athletics made him a well-known figure among educators and athletic programs throughout the state.
In addition to his work with the WVSSAC, Ray was a current member of the Fayette County Board of Education, representing the Plateau District.
“The WVSSAC extends its sincere condolences to the Ray family, his friends and all those whose lives he touched,” the organization said in its statement.
