WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – In 2024, West Virginia has already experienced 14 documented tornadoes, tying the record set in 1998 for the most tornadoes in a calendar year in the state.

According to the National Weather Service, the first twister documented in WV occurred in 1875 in Ritchie County, and since then, a total of 188 tornadoes have been documented across the state.
Before 2024, the most active year was 1998, with 14 tornadoes. Nine tornadoes were documented in 2014, and eight occurred in 2016.
On April 2, 2024, West Virginia also shattered the one-day record for the most twisters to occur in a single day. The strongest tornado to strike the area was in Fayette County.
