(LOOTPRESS) – The Virginian Railroad was started by Henry Huttleston Rogers, as a reaction to the N&W Railroad failing to negotiate on coal hauling prices. Mr. Rogers spent approximately $70,000,000 of his own money to build the Virginian.
Because he did not have to answer to stockholders, he could spend as much money as he wanted, choosing to tunnel through mountains, rather than circling around them, as the other railroads did. Therefore, his railroad was faster and a cheaper way to haul coal to the port in Virginia.
What happened to the Virginian Railroad?
The Virginian Railroad was bought out by the Norfolk & Western (N&W) Railroad in 1959, 50 years after it was offered to them.
Why was the Virginian Railroad important to Princeton?
The Virginian Railroad was important to Princeton, as it opened up transportation facilities for the area. It was, also, the largest employer in Princeton for many years, employing between 700-800 people at one time between the depot and the shops, which repaired and manufactured parts for the Virginian. Early on, Princeton retained its county seat status, as it allowed newly arrived Virginian workers to vote in an election to determine the county seat against Bluefield.

What exactly was the caboose used for?
The caboose was essentially a house for the conductor and other train employees. It had a bed, cooking facilities, closets, toilet and a table and bench for doing his paperwork.
What was the bicycle-looking contraption used for?
It is called a velocipede and was used for maintenance of the tracks in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
What were the yellow cars outside used for?
The yellow cars were maintenance vehicles that were used to check the condition of the tracks.
When did the depot close? Why?
Passenger service was discontinued on the Virginian Railway in 1956. The depot remained open for offices until it was bought out by the N&W. They closed both the depot and the shops.

There is no admission charge to visit the museum for individuals.
