PENDLETON COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A wildfire burning south of Circleville near the Big Mountain area in Pendleton County in Monongahela National Forest has grown to an estimated 70 to 80 acres, according to officials managing the response.
The blaze, known as the Woodside Fire, was first reported on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, when a private landowner spotted smoke and alerted authorities.
The fire is currently 30% contained and is burning in steep, mountainous terrain covered by oak and hickory forest, making ground access difficult.
The U.S. Forest Service and the State of West Virginia are managing the fire through a unified command.
Approximately 70 firefighters are assigned to the incident, along with two crews, one bulldozer, and one helicopter. Another Type-2 helicopter equipped for water drops is scheduled to arrive later today. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Firefighters are working to build and reinforce containment lines around the fire’s perimeter. Officials say safety of both the public and fire personnel remains the top priority.
Smoke from the fire may be visible in Circleville, Big Mountain, Thornwood and surrounding communities. Drivers are urged to use caution, as shifting smoke could affect visibility.
With dry and windy conditions creating elevated fire danger, residents and visitors are asked to avoid outdoor burning and practice fire safety.
No closures have been issued, but the public is being asked to stay clear of the fire area.
Officials also remind the public that flying drones near wildfire operations is prohibited, as it forces aircraft to be grounded for safety.
Weather conditions are expected to remain dry, with low humidity and steady winds continuing to pose challenges for containment efforts.
