FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS) – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources has completed more than $1.2 million in infrastructure improvements at Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area, marking a significant investment aimed at improving public access and modernizing facilities in Fayette County.
According to the WVDNR, the project is part of a multi-year effort to update facility standards and address longstanding concerns about the lake’s accessibility and amenities.
The largest portion of the investment was the construction of a new $1.16 million wildlife management area headquarters, which will serve as a central location for management operations and public assistance.
The agency also invested approximately $24,000 to install new courtesy docks at the primary boat launch, the dam and the lake’s upper end. That project was announced and completed in 2024 to improve access for boaters and anglers.
Additional improvements include resurfacing the accessible fishing pier near the dam, clearing overgrown brush, adding riprap to reduce shoreline erosion, upgrading parking lot lighting, improving road drainage and installing new signage throughout the wildlife management area.
“These upgrades are a reflection of our commitment to being good stewards of West Virginia’s natural resources while ensuring that our facilities meet the expectations of our hunters and anglers,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion.
“Plum Orchard Lake is a vital asset for Fayette County and by investing in this infrastructure, we are ensuring that future generations will be able to enjoy this area for years to come.”
Plum Orchard Lake is known for fishing opportunities, including trophy-sized largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie and channel catfish. The surrounding wildlife management area also offers hunting opportunities for deer, bear, turkey, waterfowl and squirrels.
Located off Interstate 77 near Pax, Plum Orchard Lake Wildlife Management Area is approximately 20 minutes from Beckley. The area offers primitive camping, while additional cabins and campsites are available at nearby Babcock State Park.
