WEST VIRGINIA (LOOTPRESS) – As the new year approaches, the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is ready for snowfall expected across the state on New Year’s Day, Wednesday, January 1, 2025. The WVDOT is urging drivers to be prepared and cautious as they take to the roads. Statewide, the WVDOT has stockpiled more than 200,000 tons of salt to treat roads this winter, and more than 1,000 snowplows are ready to go,
“We are closely monitoring the forecast and will be ready to respond as needed,” said Joe Pack, P.E., WVDOT Chief Engineer of Operations. “While the snowfall is expected to be light, it can still cause slick spots, particularly on elevated roadways and secondary routes. Drivers should always adjust their driving to road conditions.”
WVDOT crews are prepared to treat roads with salt and brine where necessary, focusing on high-traffic areas and priority routes. Snowplows will be deployed as soon as any accumulation is detected, with a focus on maintaining safe travel on interstates and major highways. Crews will work around the clock to address any developing issues, ensuring that the roads remain as safe as possible for New Year’s Day travelers.
“We are ready to respond quickly, and our crews will be out early to make sure major roads are treated before conditions worsen,” Pack said. “Even light snow can create slick conditions, so we encourage all drivers to remain cautious and adjust their driving to the weather.”
Winter Travel Safety Tips:
- If you must travel, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready, including having a full tank of gas, properly inflated tires, and functioning lights.
- Always keep a safe following distance from snowplows and other maintenance vehicles.
- Pack an emergency kit with essentials like water, snacks, blankets, and a flashlight, especially if traveling on less-traveled roads.
- Adjust your speed and allow extra time to reach your destination.
The WVDOT encourages drivers to stay informed by checking road conditions on the WV 511 website, which provides real-time updates on road closures, accidents, traffic congestion, and weather-related conditions.
