WYOMING COUNTY, WV (LOOTPRESS)— A domestic disturbance in Wyoming County on Saturday evening led to the arrest of a local man after authorities say an argument escalated into threats involving both a firearm and a knife.
According to the West Virginia State Police, troopers were dispatched around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 29, 2025, after a woman reported a disturbance involving her ex-husband, John Church.
Troopers met the victim at a separate location, where she told investigators that Church had been arguing with her “all day.” When she attempted to leave the residence, she said he followed her outside and approached her aggressively. Fearing for her safety, she drew a handgun.
The victim reported that Church then pulled a knife, wrestled the gun away from her, and warned her that “if she ever did that again, he would kill her.” She told police he then returned inside the home with her young grandson.
Troopers advised the victim on her legal options, including obtaining a Domestic Violence Protective Order (DVP), which she agreed to pursue.
Suspect Found With Knife, Marijuana
Troopers and a Wyoming County deputy arrived at the residence around 6 p.m., where they located Church and detained him. A search revealed he was carrying a pocketknife matching the victim’s description, along with a bag of marijuana.
Church admitted to arguing with his ex-wife and following her outside but said he returned indoors after she drew the gun.
Charges Filed; Child Protective Services Notified
Church was arrested on charges of Domestic Assault and possession of a controlled substance. Deputies remained at the home and contacted Child Protective Services to arrange care for the juvenile present during the incident.
Church was transported to the WVSP Jesse Detachment for processing.
Authorities confirmed all criminal activity occurred within Wyoming County.
