PINEVILLE, WV (LOOTPRESS) – A Wyoming County man was sentenced to one-to-five years in prison on Wednesday in relation to failure to report updated information with regard to sex offender status.
According to Wyoming County Prosecutor, Greg Bishop, on February 1, 2024, Shawn Paul Murphy – 37 years old of Sophia, WV – visited the Jesse Detachment of the West Virginia State Police to update his annual sex offender registry. Murphy failed, however, to report a vehicle as well as an address change.
On March 11, 2024, Murphy pleaded guilty and was convicted on one count of Failure to Register as a Sex Offender – a felony charge.
“We will continue to work with the West Virginia State Police to ensure compliance with the sex offender registration laws to ensure the safety and security of all our citizens, particularly our children,” said Bishop.
Wyoming County Assistant Prosecutor, Derek Laxton acted as lead prosecutor in the case, which was investigated by Corporal D. G. Pierson of the West Virginia State Police.
Bishop extended thanks to Assistant Prosecutor Laxton, “for his hard and thorough work,” along with the entire prosecutor’s staff and Cpl. Pierson of the WVSP.
